Recording of Copyright 101 Webinar

On March 16 DeepDyve hosted a webinar featuring CEO Bill Park talking with Sarah Johnson of the Copyright Licensing Agency about the dos and don’ts of managing the copyright licenses for your organization’s academic literature. A strong turnout generated a very interesting discussion with plenty of questions. If you missed it, you can find a recording of the webinar here. (Update: you need to use passcode n.59w$kL to view it.)

After the webinar Sarah sent additional answers to questions received during the discussion:

Regarding the question about about papers acquired at university:

“The company needs to own or subscribe to the content being copied. If the company subscribes to the same journal that the articles acquired while at university are from, then it would be fine. So for example if I have a personal folder that I’ve kept from university days, with a journal article PDF from the BMJ in it, and I want to email it to a colleague at work, then that would only be OK if the company subscribes to the BMJ (and thus I would have been able to access the same article through that subscription).”

Regarding the different licence types:

Multinational Licence (non-UK HQ):

If your company is headquartered outside the UK then this licence will cover you. The cost of the CLA Business Multinational Licence is calculated based on the type and size of your business and can cover your sites, subsidiaries and associated companies worldwide.

  • UK employees—can copy from all CLA repertoire, I recommend they check the permissions tool on the home page of CLA website (Licence Type: Business Licence)
  • Employees outside of the UK—can copy from UK publications (from CLA repertoire) and publishers and imprints whose works can be copied whatever their country of publication https://cla.co.uk/international/territories , I recommend they check the permissions tool on the home page of CLA website (Licence Type: Multinational Licence)
