GLP-1 Research Roundup: Seven Studies Beyond Diabetes

These seven papers, published from June through September 2026, examine GLP-1-based medicines in surgery, dermatology, psychiatry, cardiology and pediatrics. Topics include surgical complications, hair shedding, prescribing practices and treatment outcomes beyond diabetes.

1. Impact of GLP-1 Agonist on Surgical Wound Complications After Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, September 2026

A propensity-matched database study found more wound complications within 30 days among GLP-1 users: 9.8% versus 3.6% after abdominoplasty. The association does not establish that the drugs caused the complications.

2. Impact of Preoperative Semaglutide Discontinuation Timing on Postoperative Outcomes in Aesthetic Abdominoplasty

Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, August 2026

In a retrospective study of 80 patients, complication rates were 45% among those continuing semaglutide until surgery and 10% among those stopping four weeks before. The small, nonrandomized comparison does not establish a medication-pause recommendation.

3. Prevalence and Predictors of Hair Shedding Among GLP-1 Receptor Agonist Users

Skin Appendage Disorders, August 2026

In a cross-sectional survey of 152 users in Saudi Arabia, 70.4% reported hair shedding after starting treatment. The sample was predominantly female; its self-reported prevalence is not directly comparable with clinical-trial rates or an estimate for all users.

4. Use and Misuse of GLP-1 Receptor Agonists Among People With Eating Disorders

JAMA Psychiatry, June 2026

This US cross-sectional study examines the prevalence of GLP-1 drug use and misuse among people with eating disorders. Its focus is patterns of use, rather than testing a treatment for eating disorders.

5. Online Prescribing of GLP-1 Receptor Agonists

JAMA, July 2026

A secret-shopper study examines the prescription process and clinical engagement involved in obtaining GLP-1 drugs from online sellers. It looks at how prescriptions are obtained, not how well the medicines work.

6. Effect of GLP-1 Receptor Agonists on Post-Ablation Atrial Fibrillation Recurrence: A Meta-Analysis

Pacing and Clinical Electrophysiology, August 2026

This meta-analysis examines GLP-1 receptor agonists and atrial fibrillation recurrence after ablation. The question is whether the medicines are associated with the rhythm disorder returning after a procedure, rather than weight loss alone.

7. Obesity Management Pharmacotherapies and Lifestyle Treatment for Pediatric Obesity Management

JAMA Pediatrics, June 2026

A systematic review and network meta-analysis compares medications, structured lifestyle treatments and their combinations for children and adolescents with obesity. Its scope includes lifestyle treatment as well as medication, rather than drugs alone.

These selected papers are not a systematic review or treatment recommendations.
